If you’re wondering how to prepare for senior photos, you’re not alone. Senior photos are something most families only experience once, so it’s completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and uncertainty leading up to your session.
What should you wear?
What should you bring?
What if you feel awkward in front of the camera?
As a Canton Ohio photographer who works with seniors across Northeast Ohio, I guide my clients through every step so they feel confident, prepared, and completely themselves before they ever step in front of the camera.
Here’s exactly how to prepare for your senior photos so your session feels easy, fun, and stress-free.
Prepare for Senior Photos
One of the biggest misconceptions is that you need to have everything figured out before booking your senior session.
You don’t.
Every JLP senior goes through a planning process that takes the pressure off you. We walk through outfit ideas, locations, and the overall vibe you want for your session during a one-on-one zoom planning consultation.
Instead of guessing, you’ll know exactly what to expect and how everything will come together.

Choose Outfits That Feel Like You
What you wear plays a huge role in how your photos look and how confident you feel.
The goal is not to wear something trendy or something you think you should wear. The goal is to wear outfits that feel like you on your best day.
A few simple tips:
- Choose 3 to 6 outfits with different styles or vibes
- Mix casual and dressy looks
- Add your letterman jacket or your sports uniform
- Stick with colors that complement your skin tone
- Avoid busy patterns or logos that distract
- Make sure you can move in your outfits
Before your session, we will go over your outfits together so you feel completely confident in your choices.

Trust Professional Hair and Makeup
Hair and makeup is one of the most important parts of your senior experience, and it’s something I highly recommend to every client.
Professional hair and makeup is designed specifically for the camera. It enhances your natural features while still looking like you.
More importantly, it helps you feel confident walking into your session.
When you feel good, it shows in every single photo.

Get Comfortable Before You Step in Front of the Camera
You do not need to know how to pose.
This is one of the biggest concerns seniors have, and it’s something I guide you through the entire time. From how to stand to what to do with your hands, I’ll walk you through everything in a way that feels natural and easy.
Most seniors start their session a little nervous, and within the first 10-15 minutes, they’re laughing, relaxed, and having fun. Oh and we will be playing your fav music so that always helps!

Bring the Little Things That Matter
There are a few small things that can make a big difference during your session:
- A brush or comb for quick touch-ups
- Lip gloss or lipstick for refreshing your look
- Comfortable shoes for walking between locations (BIG tip here!)
- Any personal items that reflect your personality or interests
These little details help your session run smoothly and keep you feeling your best.

Focus on the Experience, Not Perfection
The best senior photos don’t come from being perfect.
They come from feeling confident, relaxed, and present in the moment.
Your session is designed to feel fun, natural, and completely centered around you. When you trust the process and enjoy the experience, that’s when the magic really happens.

Your Senior Photo Experience Starts Before Your Session
Preparing for your senior photos doesn’t have to feel overwhelming.
With the right guidance, it becomes part of the experience.
